Are you up for an amazing journey that most U.S. residents haven't experienced or heard of? Consider exploring Sedona, Arizona, an often-overlooked treasure that promises a unique and unforgettable experience. Our adventure began in Phoenix, where we seamlessly transitioned from a flight to a scenic two-hour drive north to Sedona. Nestled among the captivating Red Rock Hills and Canyons, Sedona beckons with its enchanting landscapes and vibrant culture.
Sedona offers an array of exceptional accommodations, ranging from luxurious resorts with golf courses to prime real estate opportunities. Consider spending at least four nights in this breathtaking destination; we found a week to be the perfect duration for exploration and relaxation.
The town itself boasts an impressive array of restaurants and shops, with downtown Sedona and Tlaquepaque standing out as highlights. Tlaquepaque, renowned as the Epicenter of Art and Culture, hosts world-class galleries, specialty shops, and enjoyable dining options.
One of Sedona's iconic landmarks is "The Chapel of the Holy Cross," a marvel built into the red rock buttes in 1956. A must-see, this architectural wonder adds a spiritual touch to the already mesmerizing surroundings. While other states like Utah and Colorado may flaunt red rock hills, Sedona's unique charm sets it apart as the best in our opinion.
Sunsets in Sedona are nothing short of spectacular, especially when the rays illuminate the red rocks. For an optimal viewing experience, head to the Sedona Airport Scenic Overlook or Bell Rock. To complement the stunning scenery, indulge in Southwest cuisine at the popular Mesa Grill, conveniently located at the airport.
For a touch of magic and energy, explore the Cathedral Rock Vortex. Words fall short of describing the experience; it's something you have to feel for yourself. Consider an off-road vehicle tour through the hills and back roads, where unexpected encounters, like spotting a mountain lion partaking of his catch, can add to the adventure.
Venture just 25 minutes away to the charming town of Jerome, with its delightful breakfast spot, Clinkscale. We even had the pleasure of sharing a meal with the Mayor on our second visit.
A day trip to the Grand Canyon's South Rim, a mere 2 hours and 15 minutes away, is a non-negotiable highlight. The awe-inspiring views prompted a poignant moment as we fulfilled a wish for a departed loved one by scattering ashes at two spots within the canyon.
A great way to widen your exploration is with a group tour to Page, Arizona. It’s the home to Horseshoe Bend and Antelope Canyon, which offers magnificent views. A 3-hour drive takes you through Flagstaff and the expansive Navajo Nation reservation, providing a glimpse into the region's rich cultural tapestry. While in Page, don't miss the Cameron Trading Post, a tourist stop with captivating merchandise.
Antelope Canyon, the most photographed slot canyon in the American Southwest, showcases nature's artistry. Opt for the Upper or Lower Canyon tour, which requires reservations through the Navajo Tribal Authorized Guide Service. The Lower Canyon, with its narrow passageways, reveals a mesmerizing play of colors on the canyon walls, shaped over millions of years by water and wind erosion.
Our journey to Sedona proved not only relaxing and visually stunning but also remarkably educational. This hidden gem in the heart of the Southwest invites exploration, promising a wealth of unforgettable experiences.
