The Retired Life, Part 2: Why I chose to retire in a small Delaware town
Townsend's affordability and proximity to major cities were a draw
Although I was born in Washington, DC, my family moved to Delaware when I was 10 years old. After living in several other cities, I returned to Delaware. I got married and raised my two sons while enjoying the environment and amenities that the state had to offer. So after exiting my career in medical sales, I needed to decide where I would live out the autumn of life.
Choosing the perfect place to retire is a significant decision that requires careful consideration. While I thought about other locations, I never really considered leaving Delaware. However, I was ready to leave Wilmington. Townsend, Delaware, a small town nestled in New Castle County, offered a host of compelling reasons for me to make my home here. From its idyllic location and favorable climate to its tight-knit community and abundant recreational opportunities, Townsend provides an exceptional retirement experience and is a great option to examine. These are some of the attributes that attracted me.
Tranquil and Picturesque Setting:
One of the standout features of Townsend is its serene and picturesque setting. Situated in the heart of the Delaware Valley, Townsend boasts beautiful landscapes, rolling hills, and lush farmland. The town's charm lies in its tranquil atmosphere, offering a peaceful retreat from the hustle and bustle of city life. Retirees can enjoy the beauty of nature, indulge in leisurely walks, and bask in the breathtaking views that Townsend has to offer.
Affordability and Cost of Living:
Retiring in Townsend, Delaware, presents a significant advantage in terms of affordability. Compared to many other retirement destinations, Townsend offers a reasonable cost of living, including affordable housing options and everyday necessities. Property taxes are also relatively low, allowing retirees to stretch their retirement savings further. This affordability factor allows individuals to maintain a comfortable lifestyle without the financial stress often associated with retirement.
Mild Climate:
The climate in Townsend is another appealing aspect for retirees. The town experiences a mild four-season climate, with warm summers and relatively mild winters. This moderate climate allows retirees to enjoy outdoor activities throughout the year without the extreme temperature variations found in other regions. Whether it's exploring the local parks, golfing, or simply enjoying the fresh air, Townsend provides an ideal climate for an active and enjoyable retirement.
Accessibility to Major Cities
I will admit that I'm both a confessed shopper and a Jazz enthusiast, so having the ability to take advantage of both avocations is important. Living in Towsend offers access to both based on its proximity to major East Coast cities. Driving I can be in New York in two and a half hours, Philadelphia in one and a half, Baltimore in one and a half, and Washington, DC in one hour and 45 minutes. If I don't want to drive I can travel 30 minutes to the Wilmington Amtrak Station and hop on a train to any of these great cities. Recently, Avelo Airlines announced an expansion of service from Wilmington. You can now get direct flights to five states and among those destinations are eight Florida cities, which makes getting away during the winter easy.
Local Attractions and Strong Community Spirit:
Townsend is known for its strong sense of community and neighborly spirit. Residents take pride in their town and actively participate in local events, clubs, and organizations. Retirees will find a warm and welcoming community, making it easy to forge new friendships and create meaningful connections. The town hosts various festivals, farmers' markets, and community gatherings, fostering a close-knit environment where everyone feels like family. Nearby larger cities such as Wilmington, Dover, and Middletown also offer a range of shopping centers, restaurants, cultural attractions, and entertainment options
Proximity to Amenities and Healthcare:
Despite its small-town charm, Townsend is conveniently located within close proximity to essential amenities and quality healthcare services. Major research hospitals like Penn Medicine, Johns Hopkins, and Sloane Kettering are within reach. Access to top-notch medical facilities and healthcare providers in Delaware is readily available, ensuring that residents can easily access the healthcare services they may need during their retirement years.
Recreational Opportunities:
Surprisingly, as a retiree, there are a lot of things to do here. The town and its surrounding areas boast a wealth of recreational opportunities. Outdoor enthusiasts can explore the nearby Blackbird State Forest or take leisurely strolls along the scenic trails of the Augustine Wildlife Area. Additionally, the town's proximity to Delaware Bay and the Atlantic Ocean provides easy access to beaches and water-based activities. Golfers will appreciate the proximity to several world-class golf courses. My development has a great one along with tennis courts, a swimming pool, and a gym.
Cultural and Historical Significance:
Delaware, known as the "First State," is rich in history, and Townsend is no exception. Retirees interested in history and culture will find themselves immersed in a region teeming with significant historical sites and landmarks. Nearby attractions include the historic town of Odessa, with its well-preserved 18th and 19th-century architecture, and the historic Fort Delaware, where visitors can step back in time and experience the Civil War era firsthand.
Retiring in Townsend, Delaware, offers me many advantages that made it an excellent choice in my pursuit of a fulfilling and enriching retirement lifestyle. From its tranquil and picturesque setting to its strong community spirit, Townsend provides a welcoming and supportive environment. My decision to spend the golden years of my life here is reaffirmed every day.
